Geraldine Ring from Matt Talbot Services attends Irish Penal Reform Conference

Geraldine Ring by invitation from Dr. Ursula Kilkelly, Law Dept., UCC gave a presentation in Dublin at a conference jointly hosted by the Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT), Barnardos and the Irish Association for Young People in Care (IAYPIC) on September 23rd 2011.  The theme “Criminal Justice and Social Justice - Building Better and Safer Communities”.  Geraldine spoke about how MTS can be used as an effective intervention and diversion for young people from the criminal justice system.  The feedback from this was excellent with delegates reporting that Ger’s presentation was a refreshing look at real life issues and stories.  Other presenters on the day were Professor Pat Donlan of NUI Galway who spoke on the theme of social justice and social capital.  While the topic of the link between crime policy and social policy was addressed by Prof. Lesley McAra from Edinburgh University, Dr. Paul O’Mahony from TCD and Prof. Tony Fahey from UCD.
